We needed to rent gear for last weekend’s ice climbing trip so we stopped by Rock and Snow in New Paltz, NY where we grabbed specialized boots, ice axes and crampons.
But even if you don’t need to rent gear, you won’t regret stopping at Rock and Snow. The shop is well stocked with outdoor adventure essentials including clothing, shoes, gear, guide books and a collection of graphic t-shirts that showcase regional pride. There’s also a consignment annex where you can buy and sell used gear (inspect carefully!).
Our favorite thing about Rock and Snow is that they have older rock climbing gear on display so you can check out what the pioneers of the sport were wearing when they made all those first ascents in the nearby Gunks. It will make you want to kiss your rock climbing shoes even though they pinch your toes.
